Nigeria is never going to get anywhere progressively, the shackles will never be broken because we continue to recycle the same people into power – at least its something our great Fela can testify to.
The activist through his music spoke of oppression of the people by its government in the 70s. Angered, the government ordered that the star must be punish harder than they did before (as he was been targeted heavily for his outspoken ways).
Guess who the Head of State was at the time the order was made? General Olusegun Obasanjo. The same President who ruled Nigeria for 8 years (again) from 1999 – 2007.
In 1984, Muhammadu Buhari, yes Nigeria’s current president and the then Head of State jailed Fela for five years for allegedly “smuggling currency”.
Before that, Fela had sang in Beast of No Nation “No be outside Buhari dey ee / na craze man be dat / animal in craze man skini” – taken from Wikipedia.
But because there is no such thing as democracy, no such thing as human right or free speech in Nigeria, he was jailed.
Many such as Amnesty International campaigned against it, arguing it was politically motivated. As a result, General Ibrahim Babangida, who had overthrown Buhari’s regime, let him go after 20 months.
Nigerians can never truly be free if its government continues to be recycled. It will continue to see awful events such as EndSARS, Japa Nation, New Naira fiasco and petrol scarcity.
Nigeria needs a change, a fundamental change that can eradicate those from the 70s, 80s, 90s, those that refuse to keep up with the time, that refuse to make Nigeria great again – as it once used to be.
