(Un)Happy democracy day Nigeria

The UK is enjoying a long weekend off with today being its bank holiday and so is Nigeria.

Patriotism is jumping off the roof as Nigerians celebrate today’s bank holiday – Democracy Day. Many took to  twitter to voice their take on #democracyday and (mostly) ordinary citizens say there is nothing to celebrate given Nigeria’s economic conditions, its ailing President who is in London, and a corrupt government.

Here is what some had to say below.

There were prayers, attempt at unity and encouragment posters laid for Nigerians to have hope, these were mainly from organisations including UK in Nigeria diplomat, Andrew Fleming

The day is observed May 29th annually, to recognise the end of decades of military rule when power was handed over to democratic ex-President Olusegun Obansanjo in 1999.
