“What’s going on in South Africa?” Prominent twitter user asks following the death of Costa Titch, AKA and 9 other artists in recent times

Popular Twitter user @AdvoBarryRoux have listed top South African rappers and artists who have died just within a space of two years, and questioned why it is happening.

The artists named were Killer Kau, Lil Meri, Ricky Rick, DJ Sumbody, DJ Pencil, Vusi Ma R5, AKA, Mampintsha, Costa Titch, DJ Citi and DJ Dimplez.

Four of the artists died as a result of being shot, four died from illness, Riky Rick died by suicide, Killer Kau died by accident while Costa Titch’s death remains to be announced.

Killer Kau died, aged 23, in a car crash on his way to a gig on 7th August 2021 alongside artists, Mpura, The voice, Thando Tot and Thando Td.
Lil Meri, also known as Samuel Maritus Malatji, was a 22 year old upcoming artist who passed away in December 2021 after a short illness.
Riky Rick, real name Rikhado Muziwendlovu Makhado, is alleged to have died by suicide on 23rd February 2022 following a lengthy battle with depression, he was 34 years old.

DJ Pencil died only just a couple of days ago from Leukaemia cancer. The 40 year old, real name Pencil Sammy Moripe was part of the duo “Pencil and Zingmaster”.

Mampintsha was an artist and a producer credited for introducing the Gqom genre. The 40 year old was recovering from a mini stroke in hospital when he was said to have suffered another one that took his life away on 24th of December 2022.
