Cannes Film Festival 2023: Chika Ike stuns in gorgeous emerald green dress

Nollywood actress, Chika Ike turned heads in style at the 76th annual Cannes Film Festival, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Uma Thurman, Helen Mirren, Michael Douglas and Naomi Campbell.

The 37 year old wore a lace-inspired sequined floor length emerald dress with fish tail, draped in a state of the art green cape that featured a stunning voluptuous design created by Kud Collections and styled by celebrity stylist, Swanky Jerry.

Chika had a lot to smile about as she is the first and only Nigerian to be invited to the walk the event’s red carpet.

It comes just days after Hilda Bach broke the Guinness World Records for the longest cooking session, spending over 100 hours on her feet.

The Cannes Film Festival, previously known as the International Film Festival, is a famous event that previews movies worldwide, including documentaries, among other genres. The 2023 edition of the festival is scheduled to take place from May 16- 27 in Cannes, France.

There are no Nigerian movies featured in this year’s festival however eight African movies and documentaries made it to the list.

African Movies and Documentaries Featuring at Cannes Film Festival 2023

Sarafina – South Africa

Starring Whoopi Goldberg, Leleti Khumalo, Miriam Makeba and John Kani, Sarafina! was produced over 30 years ago in 1992, making its debut in the Festival then. Directed by Darrell Roodt, the film has been digitally re-mastered and re-introduced this year as part of the Cannes Classic selection.

Le Filles D’Olfa (Four Daughters) – Tunisia

From Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania and produced in 2023, this documentary explores the story of a woman whose two older daughters disappears, she uses professional actresses to step in and play their roles.

Banel & Adama – Senegal

This 2023 film is a debut feature from Senegalese-French filmmaker Ramata-Toulaye Sy entered into the Palme d’Or section. It is a love story set in a remote village in northern Senegal.

Goodbye Julia – Sudan

This film is the first from Sudan to feature in the Un Certain Regard section of the Film Festival. Directed by Mohamed Kordofani, it tells of the complicated relationship between two women; Mona, an upper-middle-class former popular singer from North Sudan who employs Julia, from South Sudan, as a maid.

Les Meutes – Morrocco

Produced by Kamal Lazraq, a father and son in the suburbs of Casablanca get by on petty crimes for a local mob. When a kidnapping goes wrong, they must find a way to dispose of the body.

Kadib Abyad (The Mother of all lies) – Morrocco

A documentary produced by Moroccan filmmaker, Asmae El Moudir, tells of a woman in search of the truth about her family history following her own mother’s lies.

Omar La Fraise – Algeria

A gangster escapes a life of crime in France to become an exile criminal in Algiers. Produced by Franco-Algerian, Elias Belkeddar, it was entered into Midnight Screenings section of the Festival.

Augure (Omen) – Congolese

Competing in the Un Certain Regard category, Omen is a feature debut of Belgian-Congolese hip-hop artist Baloji. It sees a young Congolese man return back home after years in Belgium to confront the intricacies of his family and culture.

Mambar Pierrette – Cameroon

Produced by Rosine Mbakam and presented at the Director’s Fornight sidebar section, the film follows the daily life of Mambar, a resilient seamstress in Douala, as she faces the challenges of rain, preparing for the start of the school year and family life.
