The United Kingdom has added Nigeria to its red list in an effort to restrict the spread of Omicron, a variant of Coronavirus.

It comes after Nigeria announced Omicron was detected in the country, and 21 of the 27 reported UK cases were travellers coming from Nigeria.

This means only UK citizens and residents will be able to enter the country from Nigeria while everyone else – who have been in Nigeria in the last 10 days – will be turned away if they attempt to fly.

Citizens and residents will have to pay up to £2,285 to stay in a quarantine hotel for 10 days or could be fine £4000 if you don’t book before travelling.

Following the latest development, all international arrivals to the UK will now be required to take pre-departure COVID-19 tests, the Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, said on Saturday.

“Nigeria is second only to South Africa for cases linked to Omicron,” Javid said.

He added that there are “27 cases already in England and that’s growing”.

Javid also said the measures are “hugely unfortunate” for people who already had travel plans, but insisted the ban is temporary, with a three-week review set on 20 December.

“We want to remove them as soon as we possibly can,” he added, saying that “vaccines remain our first line of defence”.

The announcement which came in Saturday, Dec. 4, stated Nigeria will be added to the list from 4am Monday 6 December and from “4am on Tuesday 7 December anyone aged 12 and above wishing to travel to the UK will need to show a negative pre-departure test (LFD or PCR) as close as possible to departure and not more than 48 hours before to slow the importation of the new variant.” states Gov.uk.
