Remember their names: The Nigerian citizens killed by SARS

A swatch of Nigerian citizens have been victims of SARS have been named, and Nigerians on 16th October 2020 took to the streets to remember them.

These people are thought to be only a handful of individuals that have been identified. There are many that may never be identified.

According to a Amnesty report, the Special Anti-Robbery squad set up to fight violent crimes have targeted individuals predominantly men between ages 18-35, and are associated with at least 82 cases of torture and death.

The group have now been disbanded and replace with another unit called SWAT to which Nigerian still call to also be disbanded.

Victims so far identified are listed below. May the dead RIP.

Jimoh Isiaq

Shot dead by the police today during an #EndSARS protest in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

Ayomide Taiwo

20 year old attacked by a police officer, Inspector Ago Egharepbe in Osun State. He died after six days in coma.

Peter Ofurum

A First Class Accounting student killed by police during a student protest against increase in school fees.

Chika Ibeku

Amnesty International declared the 29 year old him missing since 7th April 2009 following an arrest made by police.

He was held in by the Swift Operation Squad (SOS) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, with three others – Gabriel Ejoor Owoicho, 29, Precious Odua, 27, Johnson Nnaemeka, 39 and two others.

By 11 April, police officers at SOS claimed the men were transferred to SARS, meanwhile SARS denies any knowledge of their whereabouts.

Chibuike Anams

According to Amnesty International: 23 year old Chibuike Anams was with friends at a guest house in Port Harcourt on 24th July 2009.

Police raided the place and as he attempted to escape, he was shot dead only for his family to find out his fate a week later.

Ifeoma Abugu

The new graduate was arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) on September 10 2020 when they stormed the residence of her fiancé, Adam Ugwunwa, Lokogoma, Abuja and attempted to arrest him.

Next day, her fiance was informed of her death. She had just completed her NYSC and intriduction to get married.

Christain Onuigbo

According to Amnesty internation, “Police shot and injured Christian Onuigbo on 19 March while he was parking his car in Jiwa, Federal Capital Territory.”

“He spent the night at Jiwa police station and was taken to hospital the next morning. Staff at the hospital refused to treat him without a police report, which was finally submitted at 4pm. “

“Christian Onuigbo died the following day.”

Emmanuel Egbo

15 year old boy killed by a police officer as he played with friends on 25th September 2008.

Victor Maduamago

The 24 year old was arrested in Onitsha on 20 August 2008, and handed over to SARS Awkuzu, Anambra State.

He was denied access to lawyer, medical care and family visits. In Octber 2008, he was transferred to Abuja , Force Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and his whereabouts has been unknown since then.

The CID denies any knowledge of him.

Stephen Agbanyim

The 29 year old was arrested alongside Chidi Odinauwa on 18 April 2009 and taken into custody at Borokiri police station, Port Harcourt.

On 7 May, SARS at the station denied any knowledge of their existence before informing the families that the two men were dead.

Chidi Odinauwa

Was killed alongside Stephen Agbanyim in Port Harcourt.

Boma Augustine Fingesi

Boma Augustine Fingesi was arrested by the police on 15 October 2008 and taken to the State Intelligence and Investigation Bureau (SIIB) in Port Harcourt where he was paraded in front of journalists as a suspected kidnapper.

Since then he has been unaccountable for. Police claim he was no longer in detention as he had been released on bail but could not account for who released him or whom he was released to.

Tony Oruama

Tony Oruama was killed by armed policemen in mufti as he waited for a bus heading for burial in Port Harcourt.

The men opened fire on him and Godswill Pakaye, Mbakwe Oruama and Harry Ataria, it is thought Harry and Tony were the only ones killed.

Kazeem Tiyamiu

The professional footballer was shopping when SARS officers grabbed and pushed him into their bus.

They took him along with his colleague. As they drove to Abeokuta, the policemen stopped, and Kazeem prompted to question their validity for his arrest. The men pushed Kazeem out of the vehicle and was instantly hit by a vehicle and somersaulted to the other side of the road.

He died in hospital. The promising footballer who was an assistant captain at Remo Stars Football Club (RSFC),

Mus’ab Sammani

Was arguing with a tricycle operator after being hit by the operator. A police officer serving a Commercial Bank went to intervene.

The officer informs Mus’ab to go park on the other side of the road, on thinking Mus’ab is escaping he shot fire.

Kolade Johnson

Officers were attempting to arrest another man because of his dreadlocks, they were supposedly mobbed by the boys and fired.

Johnson was killed allegedly by Sergeant Godwin Orji as a result on 31st March 2019

Chukwuemeka Onovo Matthew

The 22 year old student left his father’s house in Enugu on the morning of 4 July 2008. When he failed to come home that afternoon, his father went to the police to report him missing.

His father was informed by neighbours he had been killed at a shootout with the police. Police claimed he was an armed robber but eye witnesses claim he was unarmed.

Chinedu Ani

On 1 August 2005, Chinedu Ani and his friend asked a politician for financial support for the friend’s football career. Witness claim the politician became angry and threatened them subsequently complaining at the police station that he was being harassed by armed robbers.

An hour later the two men were shot, and Chinedu died before reaching the hospital they were being taken to. His friend was badly wounded.

Precious Odua

The 27 year old was arrested by the Swift Operation Squad (SOS)alongside Chika Ibeku, 29, Gabriel Ejoor Owoicho, 29, Johnson Nnaemeka, 39 and two others in 2009.

SOS claim they were transferred to the custody of SARS whom have denied any knowledge of their whereabouts.

Richard Gora

The 21 year old Architecture student at Kaduna State University had reportedly bought a phone from someone that was used to threaten someone else. SARS operatives traced the phone and stormed his residence, arresting him and taking him to their office in Kaduna.

He was tortured and left to die. The mother travelled from Kano to the state to begged for his release – at this point Gora was unconscious. The policemen refused until their boss was around.

Chijioke Iloanya

The 20 year old was picked up by SARS at a child dedication and taken to their headquarters.

His mother went to the station to find her son but were booted out by the officer in charge. The next time they revisited an officer boasted he had shot Chijioke, while other officers said the police was bluffing and Chijioke is very much alive, they should bring some money to him.

Chijioke’s father sold lands and properties to raise N3 million naira but was told it was “chicken change” (small money). The father was made to search for his son’s body in the river of dead bodies.

Linda Igwetu

The 23 year old youth corper was on her way home with co-workers when police opened fire at their car.

Daniel Tella Adewuyi

The 27 year old Finance graduate was arrested by police on his way home in Festac, Lagos.

He died in their custody and the police claimed he jumped out of a moving vehicle and sustained injuries leading to his death.

Harry Ataria

Harry was killed alongside Toney Oruama when policemen in mufti ambushed them as they waited for a bus heading for burial in Port Harcourt.

Johnson Nnaemeka

The 39 year old was arrested by the Swift Operation Squad (SOS)alongside Chika Ibeku, 29, Gabriel Ejoor Owoicho, 29, Precious Odua, 27 and two others in 2009.

SOS claim they were transferred to the custody of SARS whom have denied any knowledge of their whereabouts.

Femi Bello

The 300 level student of Economics in Kaduna State University was outside his friend’s house when policemen came and arrested them.

On waiting the who day for him, his mum and siblings who had just lost their husband and dad became worried. The family eventually found out where he was and requested his released but was told to return the following day as he was being transferred to the State CID at Lafia.

Armed with a lawyer the following day, they requested to see Femi, after being postponed to different people, they were eventually told he had died.

Chima Ikwunado

The mechanic was arrested arrested, detained, extorted and tortured to death by men of the Nigerian Police Force in Rivers State.

Along with his apprentices Victor Ogbonna, Osaze Friday, Ifeanyi Osuji and Ifeanyi Onyekwere they were accused of driving offence.

Officers found N93,000 on Chima and remanded him on allegations of car theft. He was tortured and killed, and in a bid to cover up his killing, he was declared to be ‘at large’.

Godgift Ekerete

The 24 year old was with friends waiting for a bus to take them to a funeral in Port Harcourt when a busload of armed policemen intercepted and arrested them.

They were all taken to the police station and killed same day according to Amnesty International.

He was labelled “armed robbers and cultists” along with his friends.

Chibuike Daniel Ikeaguchi

20 year old upcoming artist known as Sleek. He had just completed his JAMB exams for eligibility to polythenic or university.

He was accused of being a thief and mobile police shoot him dead in Port Harcourt.

Christain Ugwuoke

Killed by a police officer in a police patrol vehicle from Suleja Area Command, at his late aunt’s wake keeping and procession in January 2009.

Tina Ezekwe

The 16 year old secondary school student was shot and shot and killed by two police officers at the Iyana-Oworo area of Lagos State in May, 2020.

Gabriel Owoicho

The 29 year old was arrested by the Swift Operation Squad (SOS)alongside Chika Ibeku, 29, Precious Odua, 27, Johnson Nnaemeka, 39 and two others in 2009.

SOS claim they were transferred to the custody of SARS whom have denied any knowledge of their whereabouts.

Modebayo Awosike

Killed by officers of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad on October 1, 2008, claiming he is a suspected robber.

Rinji Bala Uzziel

The 20 year old was arrested with five others claiming he was part of a buglary gang.

The group were released and asked to run, as they did, the soldiers opened fire with bullets killing only Rinji.

Joseph Eidonojie Ugbeni

SARS were chasing a suspected internet fraudster who was an undergrad at a polytechnic in Edo State.

As they chased, the police began shooting sporadically and a bullet hit 20 year old Joseph. The police dumped his body in the fraudster’s car before driving away.

Anita Akapson

The lady in her 20s was killed by police in her car following visit to her friends in Abuja.

Ifeanyi Ozor

The 25 year old was shot along with five others by Officer Danjuma Ibrahim using his automatic rifle at a checkpoint in Abuja.

The group – Ifeanyi Ozor, Chinedu Meniru, Augustina Arebu, Paulinus Ogbonna, Ekena Isaac Megbe and Anthony Nwokike – were returning from a night party in June 2005.

While Ifeanyi died instantly from the shot, the other passengers including his fiance, Augustina Arebun, 22, were taken to a remote location and executed. They then planted guns and knives in the bullet-ridden car claiming the people had been robbers and killed in combat with police.

Chinedu Meniru

Chinedu was killed by police as he returned from night party.

His friend Ifeanyi Ozor was killed instantly by police when they shot, while he and remaining four – Augustina Arebu, Paulinus Ogbonna, Ekena Isaac Megbe and Anthony Nwokike – were executed.

Augustina Arebu

The 22 year old was returning from night party along with her boyfriend Ifeanyi Ozor and four others, Chinedu Meniru, Paulinus Ogbonna, Ekena Isaac Megbe and Anthony Nwokike.

Her boyfriend died after police shot at their car, while the others were executed at a remote location.

Anthony Nwokike

Anthony was killed by police as he returned from night party.

His friend Ifeanyi Ozor was killed instantly by police when they shot, while he and remaining four – Augustina Arebu, Paulinus Ogbonna, Ekena Isaac Megbe and Chinedu Meniru – were executed.

Paulinus Ogbonna

Paulinus was killed by police as he returned from night party.

His friend Ifeanyi Ozor was killed instantly by police when they shot, while he and remaining four – Augustina Arebu, Chinedu Meniru, Ekena Isaac Megbe and Anthony Nwokike – were executed.

Ekena Isaac Megbe

Ekena was killed by police as he returned from night party.

His friend Ifeanyi Ozor was killed instantly by police when they shot, while he and remaining four – Augustina Arebu, Paulinus Ogbonna, Chinedu Meniru and Anthony Nwokike – were executed.

Emeka Ojinze

Emeka Ojinze

The 23 year old riding his motorbike when a police hit him on the head with a batten. He fell in the gutter and died instantly in 2017.

Ademola Moshood

On 28th March, 2019, the motorcyclist was reportedly shot dead by a SARS policeman near his residence in Lagos when he allegedly refused to part with the sum of N200 as bribe.

Ismaila Anyinla

The 45 year old man was allegedly shot dead in a hotel by SARS where he was said to have lodged to pass the night in Iwo town, Osun State.

Miracle

The 23 year old was arrested, detained and tourtured by SARS for 40days with hardly any food before he was taken to court.

He said to be one of the few that made it alive.

Joy Ndubueze

Only recently was Joy Ndubueze lured to a canal in Opebi by Joseph Eze, a police corporal in the Lagos State Police Command, and shot in the mouth.

Eze thought he had killed Joy and fled the scene, but she did not dies and people in neighbourhood stabilised her before moving her to hospital.

Ken Niweigha

Arrested on 26 May 2009 and taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department (State CID) in Yenagoa, and paraded in front of the media.

He was killed when he after he had agreed show them his hideout but tried to escape. CID claims

Eyewitness said he was shot in the leg and in the ribs, and beaten in the neck area. His was buried in an undisclosed location by the authorities, and documents and laptop were burnt.

Aneke Okorie

A 39 year old motorcycle rider who failed to pay bribe to the police at checkpint in Enugu on 15 May 2009 was shot. He died on his way to the hospital.

Azuamak Maduemago
