COVID-19: When will UK to Nigeria international flights resume?

International commercial flights to and from Nigeria was originally expected to resumed on 29th August 2020, but this has been officially postponed.

Flights to and from the UK is expected to resume from 5th August. This will be at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International and Lagos’s Muritala Muhammed Internation Airports.

Dates is subject to change as advised by UK Government website.

As at 31st August at 13.13pm, there were approximately 334K confirmed COVID-19 cases in the UK with 41,449 deaths. Nigeria on the other hand at approximately same time had 53,856 confirmed cases, 1,013 deaths and 41,513 recoveries.

Do I need to quarantine for 14 days if I enter Nigerian from UK?

Nigeria has been listed as a high risk country for COVID-19 exposure, and the UK government advises all but essential travel to the country

If you do go to Nigeria, you are expected to self-isolate at one place only for 7 days where you will be remotely monitored by the Nigerian authorities.

On the 7th day, you will be expected to go for a PCR test.

If you develop coronavirus symptons during your time in Nigeria, you will be required to undergo quarantine at a government-monitored hotel.

Do I need to quarantine for 14 days if I enter UK from Nigeria?

Nigeria is not part of the list of exempted countries and territories, so you will need to self-isolate and provide your journey and contact details.

Be aware that rules and guidance may different in England, Wales, Scotland and Nothern Ireland.

How should I be prepared for my travel to Nigeria?

The Nigerian Aviation Authourity has provided some protocols announced by the Presidential Task Force for all passengers entering Nigeria.

You will need a negative COVID-19 PCR test that was taken WITHIN 7 days of travelling, antibody or serological tests will not be accepted. Expect some strict rules as airlines are to be fined the tune of $3,500 if any of the passengers do not have the test.

Another protocol is that you will have to pay for an in country COVID-19 test via a payment portal before travelling to Nigeria. Details of these have not yet being made known.

Additionally, the health declaration form that is usually filled on landing in Nigeria will now be online to be filled before boarding.

If these guidelines have been followed, it will be mandatory for the Nigerian Immigration Service to return your passport to you at the airport at point of exit.

The NAA are also looking to introduce approved COV-19 testing lab centres.

What happens if I have overstayed my Nigerian visa due to COVID-19 pandemic ?

The Nigerian authorities have advised that British nationals who exceed their authorised visa stays because of travel restrictions linked to coronavirus, will not be penalised for overstaying when they depart.

If your visa expired before the start of the lockdown, you will be penalised, for the period up to the start of lockdown.
