The guy once said “I am gonna be a superstar! Watch me”.
Seven years after that statement, Michael Dapaah was crowned ‘Comedian of the Year‘ at the African Pride Awards 2017.
Micheal is literally one of those over-nite sensations thanks to social media.
His comedy skits on Instagram became a magnate for many, attracting 10k folowers in February 2017, 20k a little over a month later and 50k by April – not to talk of facebook and other media platforms.
As of this post – some 4 months later – 180k people are Insta fans of the 24 year old best friend of Stormzy.

1. Croydon-born British Ghanaian
Michael was born to a Ghanaian mum and doctor dad – Dr Joseph Dapaah. He is often seen mimicking Ghanaian accents and channelling his dad in skits.
He credits his tight knit funny family for his talent – younger brother often features in his videos. He also has an older sister.
2. Comedian longtime before hitting bigtime
He may have shot the big time over-nite but comedic acts from Michael as long been before his uni days.
He once featured briefly in Meet the Adebanjos – an online web series that focused on a Nigerian British family, produced his own sketch show – I’m So Dapaah, and starred as David T in ‘Them 3’.
3. Best Friends with Stormzy
Since meeting at events for unsigned acts, Michael and Stormzy formed a solid friendship.
While it is rare to see him on Stormzy’s social pages, Michael often champions the Gangs, Signs and Prayer master. Stormzy has gone from unsigned act to a global superstar with his album and popular song Big For Your Boots.
4. SWIL Youtube hit
Despite previous failed YouTube appearances, Michael’s #SWIL skits has become his most popular work yet – primarily driven by gathering fans on social media over the years.
Many successful Instagram comics are not as successful on YouTube, but since starting his channel in April 2017, Michael has acquired 31k subscribers with over a million views.
Acts include Patrick Clover (ex dinner lady turned Community Support Officer with a cockney accent), Shaq the hood roadman and the infamous Dr Ofori – the Ghanaian Uber driver who part time specialises in relationship counselling.
5. With fame comes money
Smart mans like Michael are making good use of social media.
Aside from generating income from his Youtube channel, he also promotes business on Instagram, including his ‘Mans Not Hot’ T-shirt which sold out in weeks nd has released a track on itunes with his brother based on MC Quakez from #SWIL.

No I’m joking. Michael Dapaah is great. He is such a funny comedian and he has really pushed himself and kept going to reach his goal which he set 7 years ago, to be a SUPERSTAR. And he did! I love his song. I know It doesn’t make sense…at all, but it’s funny and up beat and I guess if he’s a comedian then of course he would write songs like that. It suits his career, it’s super funny, fun and popular with younger people. I love Big Shaq and I’m sure everyone would love to hear another one of his gibberish-like great songs in the early months of next year!!? xx
Mans Not Hot might be sitting at number 11 in the singles chart, but there’s still a lot of confusion about where Michael Dapaah stops, and Big Shaq begins.
